Book Genre: Realistic Fiction Summary: Helping her grandfather move out of his dusty old farmhouse in the middle of a New Mexican desert isn't exactly how Carolina (Carolina) planned to spend her summer. Carol soon gets tired of having to babysit her baby brother and of having to deal with a snooty older sister. And while her friends are back in Albuquerque having pool parties and backyard barbecues, she has to watch out for her Grandpa Sergio, who has dementia, in the middle of the desert during a drought. But soon, Carol is drawn into her grandfather's tales of a green-grass lake and a magical tree, a tree that gives life an immortality to it's villagers who stay in the village, with bees that keep the tree alive. And the more the summer drags on with Grandpa Sergio weaving this fabulous tales, the more they seem true. But when she finds items in the household that tie in with her grandfather's stories, Carol wonders if the stories really are true, and if the bees really will not only bring back the rain like Grandpa Sergio thinks, but also the life that was once alive and full in the desert. Personal Review: This is a real must-read. Also a real must-have, must-keep, and a must-read-on. This was truly a fabulous book that young reader will love want want to keep. I sure did (it was a library book, so that was not an option.)! Grandpa's Sergio's stories will have you wanting for more bits of his tales as each of the chapters go by. Recommendation: I would recommend this book for people who like realistic fiction, who like magical stories, who can take some death and sadness in their books, and who can relate to Carol, the middle child who in the story is split between her Mexican roots and her regular family life.
