Author: Gary D. Schmidt Book Color: Purple
Book Genre: Historical Fiction Summary: Doug recently moved to where he calls "The Dump" in Upstate New York during the time of the Vietnam War and when Apollo space missions are making history in the science industry. He tries not to be the "skinny thug" everyone in his new school thinks he is, which leads him to more trouble. But along the way he meets Lil Spicer, who helps him get through life despite his abusive father and brother, and Mr. Powell, the local librarian who shows Doug how to draw realistic birds. Soon Doug opens up to more opportunities than ever, and he begins to realize that life isn't so bad after all. Personal Review: This also was an amazing book to read. Doug is such a funny, nice character, yet you really can see how hard it is to get through life and why he has to act tough. With his abusive father and brother, with his other brother scared for life after the Vietnam War, and the way his teachers treat him at school like he is a criminal, his only comforts are his mom, Lil, Mr. Powell, and drawing. This has lots of history tied to it as well, so this would be a good way to learn about history in the 1960's. Recommendation: I would recommend this people who like to learn about history and who like fiction tied with it, who can read hurtful moments and sad times, and who would like to learn a thing or two about art. Also, though this book has only a few chapters, they are long chapters, so be prepared for that, too. Click here to read more about this amazing book!
