Book Genre: Fantasy Recommended By: Angie Wiegers Summary: Galen is the prince of Syrena, an underwater kingdom where it's citizens have the body of a normal human but the tail of a fish. Galen is sent on land to find a girl whom he hears can communicate with sea creatures. Meanwhile, Emma and her friend Chloe are on vacation in Florida. When she bumps into Galen, she thinks his is another hot guy at the beach. Little does she know that she just ran into a prince who has been looking for her all along. And it takes a few encounters with some fish (and one encounter with a deadly shark) for Galen to be sure that Emma has the Gift that could save his kingdom. Now only if he can convince her to come with him... Personal Review: I liked to read this book, especially because this book ties some Greek Mythology into the plot. My favorite part was when Emma finds out that Galen is half fish, half human. She thinks that Galen is being attacked by a shark and it just grabbed his lower half. She starts kicking him, but when she sees that there is no shark, Emma goes into shock. Recommendation: I would recommend this book for people who like mythology, who love the ocean, who like fantasy, and for people who like a little romance in their novels. Do you want to buy the book? You could actually FEEL the relationship between Maxon and America and the tension in the competition. Book Genre: Fantasy Summary: In New Avalon, everyone has a personal fairy. Even though no one can see them, they can help a person do something, like how an all-boys-like-you fairy can help you get more dates, or how a stealing fairy can make you richer. But fourteen-year-old Charlie has the worst fairy possible: a parking fairy that does nothing but make sure that the car that Charlie is in gets the best parking spot. And when she gets used by Andrew "Danders Anders" Rogers for parking spots, that makes her even more desperate to try and get rid of her fairy. So she teams up with Fiorenze (she has an all-boys-like-you fairy), who seams to have the perfect idea: peak into her mom's secret fairy book and use it's advice to swap both of their fairies. Charlie goes all in, and at first things seem to work. But when things start to get messed up, Charlie and Fiorenze need to ditch their fairies, and fast. Personal Review: This book became one of my other favorites is my Top Ten Books list. I loved the part where Charlie and her friend are walking in the city on the sidewalk when Andrew pulls up close and tells Charlie to get in. When she refuses, Andrew stops his car in the middle of heavy traffic, gets out of the car, runs to the sidewalk and tries to make Charlie get in the car so he can get a parking spot. But not a moment to soon, just as Andrew was about to drive away, two police officers came, one with a stun gun, and they stunned Andrew. I love that part. Recommendation: I recommend this book for anyone who likes fantasy and who likes fairies. I would also recommend this book for people who want to know more about a girl who lives on a fantasy island and goes to a strict high school and tries to ditch her fairy, and whoever wants to know more about the invisible fairies that live in Avalon. Who knows, maybe you'll know what type of fairy you have after reading this book! Want to buy the book? Click here. Author: Paula Yoo Book Color: Purple
Book Genre: Realistic Fiction Summary: Patti Yoon's parents want nothing but the best from their Korean-American daughter. Getting the top spot in Patti's All-State Orchestra and making sure she passes her SAT's so she can get into the Ivy League (or HARVARDYALEPRINCTON, as her mom calls it) is all they care about. So when Patti gets placed as assistant concertmaster in All-State and gets less than a 2300 on her SAT's, it makes her parents very upset. As they put it, it's simply not good enough. But she soon learns there is more to life than the SAT scores and the All-State Orchestra. There's rock concerts, her favorite band Jet Pack, and Ben Wheeler (also known as Cute Trumpet Boy), who is nice, cute, witty, clever, and loves music just about as much as she does. Soon stressful decisions and sneaky plans get Patti caught in the middle of tests and fun and forces her to make a decision: Is it time to follow your parent's' dreams or your heart? Personal Review: I really liked the book. It was funny enough to be in my Top Ten Books list. I really liked the part where she keeps complaining on how she eats Spam and kimchi with almost every meal (thanks to her mom. Patti claims that Koreans think that Spam is one of the best things in the world and that Koreans also eat kimchi with every meal). I also thought it was funny when her church group friends get her ready for a concert date with Ben. It was funny because it was the day of the Korean church's Valentine's Day Lock-In and all of the girls that were chaperones were getting Patti ready in the bathroom. They nearly got busted! Recommendation: I recommend this book for anyone who likes realistic fiction, who likes lots of book drama (because believe me, this book has plenty of it), who likes funny books, and who wants to know more about a Korean-American girl who plays the violin and has do-everything-perfect parents. The Throne Of Fire: Carter and Sadie have another problem on their hands: the chaos snake Apophis is gaining power, and the Kanes have little time to find Ra, the sun god, who could stop Apophis from bringing the world to an end. But it sure won't be easy! The Serpent's Shadow: Carter and Sadie have found Ra, but he has done little help. Even worse, time has nearly run out for the Kanes and the young Egyptian magicians for Apophis to rise. So it's up to them to travel across the US and become allies with other gods in order to prevent the end of the world. Personal Review: I really liked the series. It is my second favorite book series and I would recommend many people to pick up a book from this collection and read it because it is really good. My favorite part of the whole series is in book 1, where Carter and Sadie find out the truth about their amulets. It's really funny to read about what they do! I also liked the part in book 1 where Carter and Sadie find out that their cat, Muffin, is really the Egyptian goddess Bast. Recommendation: I would recommend this book for anyone who liked the Percy Jackson series, liked books with different viewpoints, likes fantasy, or wants to know more about Egyptian mythology. The Last Olympian: When Kronos threatens to destroy New York City (and the whole United States), it's up to Camp Half-Blood to join forces with old allies to stop the world from being destroyed. Personal Review: Like I said, it was my favorite book series EVER. I recommend for everyone to try it out because I promise you, you will LOVE it! It was a real winner for me. I have been in love with Greek mythology ever since I read it. My top 3 favorite moments from this book series are: 1. When Percy, Annabeth, and Grover get trapped in the Lotus Casino. 2. When Percy battles the Minotaur and finds out that his best friend is a satyr (half man, half goat people who look up to the god Pan but are servers of Dionysus). 3. When Percy is in the throne room with his friends in the last book, all of them getting prizes from the Greek gods. Recommendation: I recommend this book for anyone who likes fantasy, Greek mythology (or any mythology, for that matter), or really funny, sarcastic main characters. Want the first book? Click here. Book Genre: Realistic Fiction Summary: San Lee is a normal, innocent teenage boy (more like an adopted, Chinese, sarcastic teenage boy) who has moved (again) to Pennsylvania and is trying to decide what he should be in the school, because the way he sees it, blending in won't get him noticed by Woody, the guitar-playing girl of his dreams. When San is partners with her for a social studies project and studies Zen for the topic, it soon becomes much more than a Social Studies project. In fact, he becomes so popular that people (and Woody) soon know him as "The Zen Master". But when things start to collapse, can San bind things together again before "The Zen Master" is no more? Personal Review: I really loved the book! It was one of the best I ever read. It's such a shame that San Lee is only a made-up book character because if he was real, I would demand to see him in person (Then again, I could say the same thing about Percy Jackson, but that's a whole different topic for a different time.)! It was both funny and, at some parts, just a little bit sad. Perfect book! Recommendation: I would recommend this book to anyone who likes realistic fiction, funny books, books about different cultures, or books about people trying to stand apart from a group of people. Book Genre: Realistic Fiction Summary: Running is not only Jessica's hobby, it's her destiny. So when a freak car accident makes her lose one of her legs, her destiny becomes a dream, a memory, and she knows she'll never run again. And later during school, people act strange around her, like they don't want to be with her or they don't know what to say. When the track team decides to help Jessica get a prosthetic metal running leg to help her run again, Jessica is surprised, and ready to do it. But she doesn't want to run alone...she wants Rosa to go with her. Personal Review: I loved the book. And I mean, LOVED the book. I couldn't put it down because it's one of those books that have the feeling of What is going to happen next?. I love books with that sort of action and excitement at the flip of every page. Touching parts mixed in perfectly with they joyful, happier ones, making this book one of the best I've ever read. Recommendation: I recommend this book for people who like realistic fiction, books with sports, books about people with disabilities, or books with lots of action. Want the book? Click here. Author: Maya Van Wagenen Book Color: Purple
Book Genre: Autobiography Summary: Maya is at the near-bottom of her school's popularity scale. So when she finds a book from the 1950's on teenage popularity by a woman named Betty Cornell, she decides to try it out, doing one chapter every month, no matter how silly it seems or how much she gets bullied. But little by little, month by month, Betty's tips and tricks start to work, and Maya starts changing her world (and the school's popularity scale) in ways she could have never thought of herself. Personal Review: I REALLY loved this book. I would pick it up and read it over and over again if I had the option. Maya is a really good teen author and I highly advise you to try it out sometime. I liked it when she had worn a 1950's outfit to school (complete with shoes) and the gym teacher though she was homeless because the show size looked too big to her, and so asked Maya was size shoe she was so she could get her a new pair! It was SUPER hilarious!! Recommendation: I would recommend this book to anyone who likes autobiographies, teen authors, and funny (but true) stories. I would also recommend this book for people who want to be popular (who knows-Betty's idea's could work! Not like I'd use them myself or anything...). Want to buy the book? Click here. The letters soon changed into something bigger and better, and for over over six years these two forever friends changed each other's lives. Personal Review:I seriously thought it was a great book. The touching parts mixed perfectly with the silly parts and the sweet parts. I also thought it was a great idea to include some of the images they sent each other in their letters. I thought it was pretty cool and it added a nice touch. It also makes you more aware of how people live in poverty and hunger in our poorer parts of the world. It sure surprised me. Recommendations: I recommend this book for anyone who likes true stories or autobiographies, who wants to know more about how our world lives, or likes read a book with two authors and/or with different viewpoints.
